The Tea House was built together with the people of our sister city, Tokushima, Japan, in 1986. Materials were imported from Japan and Japanese carpenters flew in to oversee the construction.
We have welcomed visitors from all over the United States. According to the late Tea Master, Mr. Hisashi Yamada, former Director of the Uresenke Tea Center in New York, our Tea House is regarded as “one of the ten best tea houses outside of Japan” and it is the only authentic tea house in the Midwest.
The Japanese Cultural Center & Tea House is a non-profit organization. The City of Saginaw provides 50% of funds necessary for operations. The balance of funds required to operate come from program admissions (10%) and generous donors, businesses, and organizations within the community (40%).
To preserve this cultural gem for our community, we have formed the Tomodachi (Friendship) Society. As a donating member, you will be on our mailing list for all Cultural Center events. In addition, each year you will receive a special invitation to a tea ceremony held just for Tomodachi Society members.
